Sailing off into the Sunset…I mean Boat Yard
September 2013 – January 2014
“It would be good to live in a perpetual state of leave-taking, never to go nor to stay, but to remain suspended in that golden emotion of love and longing; to be loved without satiety.” ― John Steinbeck, The Log from the Sea of Cortez
It was in June of 2013 that we made the final decision to sail together to the Sea of Cortez. Cause why not? To prepare for this adventure we got crafty with sheet bags, saved some money, put everything into storage, and left the apartment. Happy Days! Then we found ROT…and a small crack in the hull around the rudderpost tube…and fire hazard worthy electrical. There’s more but no need to go into detail, I’ll just say that we’d planned to leave in early October 2013 and finally made it out The Gate mid January 2014.
If you have live in a boat yard, Napa is ideal. The scenery is lovely, they have owls and there is plenty of wine to keep you from feeling like you live in a boat yard, or at least enough to let you forget for a night. Basically the boat was gutted and rebuilt. It was a magical time…there was a ladder and a bucket (use your imagination) and band aids and bug spray (did I mention the wine!) It wasn’t all bad. Some nights we’d have sunset happy hour with friends and boat yard neighbors. Then later we’d listen to the owls talk to each other and fly from mast to mast.
And so it went. We woke, we worked, we drank.
And then a Christmas Miracle! Back in the water on December 26th!.
