We left La Paz after installing our awesome new water maker, saying goodbye to friends Dan and Dee, and getting one last look at the dolphins.

The Ryan’s (Steve, Genny and Lizzy) had been heading down from SF and we met me in Ague Verde. After a couple of nights by the campfire we all got on the boat for a few days sailing around Isla Carmen. There was fish catching, sushi cooking, cocktail drinking, kayaking and snorkeling. The oddest sighting were two sharks that jumped out of the water, straight into the air. Never had we seen such a thing. Fun was had by all and Lizzy turned out to be a salty sailor dog! For our last night we were treated to a lux hotel room in a beautiful setting near the boat. It was such a fun visit! Now Daniel and I will begin traveling north for more adventure.

We are leaving La Paz today and beginning our sail up north to Agua Verde (where we will meet Steve and Genny) and then on to Loreto and finally San Carlos to park the boat for the summer. Our trip is coming to an end a little sooner than expected so we are in a hurry to explore more of the Sea before our adventure ends in June. We will return to La Paz someday, hopefully with friends and family joining us!

Bonne Bell Lip gloss, Walkman with Rubber Soul tape and a Swiss Army knife. This was my answer when asked at 6th grade summer camp what 3 things I would want if stranded on a deserted island. These days I would take water, a fishing pole, and snorkel gear. Daniel, Anne and I spent four amazing days exploring Isla Espiritu Santo, an almost deserted island.

The island is a National park located about 20 miles north of La Paz. Layers of pink, ivory and black rock line secluded coves filled with clear turquoise water, surrounded by white sandy beaches. We spent our time in several coves snorkeling, hiking, reading, fishing, looking at sea turtles and staring at the scenery.

We had four days in the La Paz house. Time enough for two house parties with new friends, a dip in the pool and to explore our hood. La Paz has great energy, but is not crowded or touristy.

A little history…Two nomadic tribes inhabited the La Paz area, or Airapi as they called it, before the Spanish arrived in the 16th century.  Cortez sent a ship of dirty dues over to check out the Sea. There was a mutiny and the captain was killed. The thirsty killin’ crew went in search of water and landed in La Paz. They were immediately attacked by the pearl-wearing Airapi tribes people who sent the few survivors running back to Spain. Bad idea!! Always kill everybody…After that they were “visited” by evil greedy men who wanted their pearls and to build tall 500 unit condos.

La Paz became the capital Southern Baja’s capital in 1829 after Loreto was all but destroyed by a hurricane. A strong pearl diving industry kept La Paz going until the 1930s when the oyster beds were destroyed by disease. La Paz languished until the trans-peninsular highway was completed in 1973 and the city became capital of the newly formed State of Baja California Sur in 1974.

A little background….

The trip from De Los Muertos was best described as ridding a bucking bronco that just would now stop for 10 hours. We were heading straight into the wind and 6-8 ft waves.  Once we landed in La Paz, Heather took a vacation from everything and spent a lot of time sleeping.

La Paz is amazing! Full of history, beautiful architecture, great restaurants, cool kids and families. We have made some great new friends and Anne is visiting so our social calendar is full. Next we travel to the island of Isla Espiritu Santo to explore for a few days.

After a fun filled day on Los Frailes beach we are leaving at first light for Bahia De Los Muertos. It should take us about 10 hours. Today we went ashore and made a fire from driftwood, BBQ fish tacos and watched Manta Rays jump up and fly out of the water. Not a bad day at all.

It is our first night in the Sea of Cortez (or Gulf of California, still not sure what to call it). It is an 8 hr trip from Cabo to Los Frailes.  There was no wind, so we prepared ourselves for a dull day of motor sailing. About an hour in, Daniel saw something in the water just off the bow. There were three whales, all larger than the boat, right in front of us!  We made a sharp 90 degree turn to avoid running straight into them.  We sailed along side them just a boat length away, for a quarter mile.  There were whale sightings the rest of the day. They were all around us,  jumping up and landing on their backs, slapping the water with their fins, blowing water into the air and arching their backs, smoothly gliding through the water.  Sea World can suck it!!

We arrived  in Los Frailes delighted to find palm trees, mountains, manta rays flying out of the water, no noise, and a beautiful sunset. The beach is full of strangely ornamental cabana style umbrellas, as if they were put here for some hotel that was never built. On closer inspection, the Palapas, as they are called, are actually free, shaded camping spaces, each with a grill and table. Close by is a small fish camp with shacks and tents. Then there’s the drug lord house on a nearby hillside…A large and beautiful house with a helicopter parked out front.

For dinner, delicious home made tacos. He can sail and cook! The stars are out, and we have wine. Lovely.

We have traveled to the lands end of Baja! After nearly 800 miles of rugged and sandy coastline, 5 overnight treks, many new friends, hundreds of dolphins and three whale sightings, the catching of two fish and one bird…we have arrived at the The Cape, Cabo San Lucas.
It is just as I remember, overrun with frat boys on jet skis and ladies who wanna dance on the front of motor boats. Needless to say we are leaving at first light for Los Frailes, but first to shore to hunt for margaritas… Margarita trip was a great success. I fell in the water as soon as the kayak hit the shore, surrounded by bikini clad sorority girls. My white legs shinning in my black tank and knee length green shorts and straw hat! Success!!

We leave tomorrow for Los Frailes then de Los Muertos then La Paz!
